However national and global brands with multi million pound A&P budgets are increasingly looking for more creative and innovative ways to promote themselves and stand out in an increasingly competitive market place.

Take the popular US magazine Entertainment Weekly for example, who debuted video advertising in its September 09 edition by placing wafer-thin screens embedded in its pages that promoted CBS TV shows and Pepsi. Gimmick or not, it demonstrated the corporate desire to innovate and appear current.

The traditional advertising model will be around for a long time yet, however the future of advertising clearly lies in digital mediums. Google executive, Nikesh Arora, recently stated “People are shifting their spending dollars more and more to the online world – whether it be direct marketing, advertising, or branding and that follows industrial marketing logic, which is that you have to go where the eyeballs are, where the customers are”. That coupled with the fact that for advertisers digital ad platforms allow accurate performance tracking, which is something offline advertising has always struggled with.

DOOH (Digital Out Of Home) advertising is an up and coming area with some really innovative concepts being developed. French marketing technology firm Quividi are developing digital signage displays that have built in cameras that instantly identify a passer by’s age and gender using a facial recognition system and then delivers a product that it feels is appropriate – think Minority Report!

We already know what a valuable commodity ‘Consumer Data’ is and its link to effective contextualisation of ad messages / message customisation and therefore it is a natural progression that DOOH advertising will follow suit and the worth of digital signage will be as much in its ability to gather data as in its ad revenues.

Taking the idea of digital targeted outdoor advertising even further, Holosonics, a US based technology company has developed something called the audio spotlight, aptly named because it can create a tight, narrow beam of sound that can be controlled with the same precision as a torch onto a small area over 60ft away. The DOOH market has naturally taken to this as it enables advertisers to accurately deliver not only their visual, but now also their audio message into a very targeted area.

So what of the online world?

Facebook:

With over 400 million active users on Facebook, this channel is potentially an advertisers wet dream, particularly as Facebook offers advertisers the opportunity to reach targeted and engaged audiences through Facebook ads. These ads are targeted at users based on their likes and interests rather than their searches and although still in its infancy, businesses are now investigating and trialling campaigns to work out how to effectively leverage Facebook ads into their online spend.

In Game Advertising:

Following on from the initial rush with advertising in ‘virtual worlds’ such as ‘SecondLife’. Advertisers are starting to really understand the benefits of advertising within the gaming community and are being very creative. For example, Zygna (the creator of Farmville) with a current valuation of $4 billion are offering an new approach to in game advertising by incentivizing users to ‘interact with adverts’ by completing brand related tasks such as filing in a form or watching a video, in order to be rewarded with ‘virtual currencies’ to use within their game.

With the global gaming industry achieving over $56 billion in revenues it is fast becoming an important focus for media planners, particularly with the growth of social gaming (i.e. on Facebook). As this area matures, advertisers will be able to utilise in game advertising across different platforms.

Twitter:

Twitter has at last announced the first of its money-making ventures through advertising, with its ‘Promoted Tweets’. Twitter has teemed up with a number of commercial partners such as Disney/Pixar and Starbucks enabling them to place a ‘promoted tweet’ at the top of a ‘trending topic’ on the results page, with the aim to roll ‘promoted tweets’ out across live conversations once they have a better understanding of the users experience and advertiser value.

Twitter are measuring this first phase of ‘promoted tweets’ to ensure that they are useful to visitors (resonance). Whether they ‘resonate’ with users will be measured by whether users interact with them, retweet them etc. Twitter has stated that any ‘Promoted Tweets’ that do not resonate with users will not be allowed to continue. With over 4 billion tweets posted in the first quarter of 2010 alone, this is definitely one to keep an eye on and we at Wampit will be watching this space with interest.

Mobile:

Mobile ad spend rose by a third to 32% between 2008 and 2009, with brands from the entertainment, media and telecoms sectors spending the largest amounts on the medium, according to the IAB and PricewaterhouseCoopers. The UK spent 36.7m in the UK in 2009 despite a contraction in the advertising market in general.

So what next for mobile advertising? It seem that it’s all about Location, Location, Location with ‘Location Based Advertising’ (LBA). These are mobile adverts which target users based on their GPS location and have the potential to represent anything from a coupon for a coffee shop around the corner from where you are standing or a car dealer that has the same make and model of car as the one you where searching for on Auto Trader last night… Advertisers could even target a banner advert aimed at a certain demographic that would only appear if you were in the vicinity of their business. Although the market seems relatively small at the moment, the potential for growth is massive.

If all of that seems too ‘out there’ for your business, you could always contact Andrew Fischer at http://www.humanadspace.com/ – The first man to officially e-bay his forehead as advertising space – Genius!

Or if that doesn’t interest you, take a look at Wampit our established UK Directory with over 355,000 businesses listed. We offer free business advertising including text, images, video and live Twitter feeds and it only takes a minute to register and create your free advert.

Our structure is simple, straightforward and transparent:

‘sales agents’ work in their local area

visit any type of business in that area

Then unlike the majority of other commission only sales roles, the agent actually takes the majority of sales revenue - this is paid at the end of each week. We are offering this very attractive package in order to strategically increase the number of businesses on Wampit® by heavily incentivising the sales agent. This simple scheme is proving to be extremely popular, and although it was only launched in the press in Nov 09 we already have agents in major towns including Birmingham, Reading and Oxford.

If you‘re interested in joining our friendly, growing and successful company then please contact us and we’ll get back to you with more information, and then arrange a meeting. If you are successful then we will mentor you through the process, and provide ongoing support.

Our long-term vision is to create a permanent sales function – if you’re successful with us then we’ll look after you and grow your role in line with our success.

To learn more about this exciting opportunity, and to be at the start of something big then please call our recruitment number on 0845 519 3137

This IS the next big thing for small to medium companies!

National companies and larger organisations have used television to effectively promote their goods and services for years, well before the evolution of the camcorder. They have done this because the impact of their targeted message is far greater when their target audience is allowed to see, hear and experience it. But television advertising has generally been the domain of companies with large advertising budgets, as the cost of air space and production is prohibitive to many small & medium sized businesses.

Not anymore!

The rapid growth of YouTube has clearly shown that anyone with the will to do it can create a video, either at a base level or even at an intermediate level. Today, professional looking videos can be created by utilising any one of the many video editing software tools available, some of which are free and many others are relatively inexpensive.

YouTube is primarily an entertainment channel, however since its success, businesses are starting to realise the full potential of video advertising. Wampit® is at the forefront of this online revolution, and has built a very simple registration process that allows you to create a business listing and showcase your business video in minutes completely free of charge. Although the old saying “a picture paints a thousand words” is an accepted statement in the world of advertising, we believe the statement “a video paints a thousand pictures” will shortly supersede this.

Here’s the science bit (now concentrate)!

The IAB and Price Waterhouse Coopers stated in Sept 2009 that online Ad spend had surpassed TV for the first time ever, and separately, eMarketer has revealed that online video advertising will be the area that grows the most over the next 5 years with a projected increase of 46.2% this year and a continued, average growth of 39% over the next 5 years.

It is believed that video advertising can generate a 300% increase in leads when compared with conventional advertising, which certainly supports the reason for the growth we have already seen, and also underpins the forecasted expectations for the future of online video advertising.

Decisions & Choices!

So how do you go about creating your own business video, and where can you go online to promote it. Let’s break these areas down further:

Creating your own business video:

Decide what you want to shoot:

First, think about what you want to promote through video, is it a premises, a service, a specific product or everything? Remember, the more you decide to include in your video, the more complicated and time consuming the process will be.

Choose your equipment:

What equipment do you have available? Many camcorders and digital cameras are capable of taking high quality video (some in HD), even some mobile devices such as the iPhone take good quality video. I know it’s obvious, but make sure you have a tripod or a solid level surface if you want to avoid camera shake when filming

Get filming:

Run some test clips, to make sure you are happy with the lighting etc before trying to film the entire shot

Keep it short and to the point. Just film the elements you want to get across, less can be more in video advertising.

Here’s some suggestions:

If you are a restaurant/pub/club, steadily pan your camera round you premises when busy so people get a real feel for the ambience of your place

If you have a showroom, again pan the camera steadily around a 360° angle.

If you offer a service or trade then film people at work or create two short clips (a before and after clip) then join the clips together using a video editing package.

Edit your video if necessary:

You may have taken you video in one take and be ready to upload it, however if not, and you want to edit it, you will need to use some editing software. Most editing software is pretty intuitive for basic tasks and should not be feared. Below are two effective basic video editing packages that you could consider for Mac & PC:

Microsoft Movie Maker

This is already installed on most PC’s that are running Windows XP or later. It has simple drag and drop features to make it easier to create and edit your movie. Microsoft also provides many add-ons and upgrades for this software through their website.

Apple iMovie

Apple iMovie is the Mac alternative of Windows Movie Maker. Like Movie Maker Apple also provides many add-ons and upgrades for this software through their website. The software is only free if you buy a new Mac system. If you just want the software it can be purchased separately.

Upload and promote your business video online:

Apart from www.wampit.co.uk I am aware of only one other online business directory that allows you to register your business and post your newly created video onto your advert for FREE (www.bttradespace.com) . I would suggest that you register and create you video advert with both of them to ensure you give your video maximum coverage.

Please click on the following link to see good examples of business videos

Today saw the launch of ‘Twitter LIVE’ – an innovative and free additional advertising feature on the Wampit® UK business directory.

When a business registers on Wampit® for their free advert, as well as being able to include images, text, and even video, they will now be able to add a ‘widget’ on their company profile that will display their latest ‘tweets’ directly from their Twitter account.

Placing live Twitter feeds directly onto advert listings is a ‘first’ in the world of online business directories, as no other UK company currently offers this integrated marketing tool. Twitter have made their live update widgets available for some months, however, up until now they have only been integrated into websites / blogs – not actual directory based listings. Also, people needed to be technically savvy to implement the widget code (Twitter API).

Wampit® has simplified the process by enabling businesses to copy the code supplied by Twitter, and then paste it directly into the relevant field on the Wampit® business registration page.

Adam from Wampit® explains, ‘Twitter LIVE is a great new feature that we’re pleased to bring to the online directory market for free. As we know, Twitter is a powerful business networking tool, and by enabling Twitter LIVE on static adverts really makes them interactive and up-to-date’.

Please click here to see a ‘landing page’ example of a business that has already enabled Twitter LIVE. To see how Twitter LIVE is integrated into the actual Wampit® search results page then please click here and select ‘TwitterLIVE’ from the ‘more’ button in the first advert.

Advertising used to be such a simple affair – street peddlers used to promote their wares through the streets of London by shouting and bellowing in the street, and the Greeks used to shout out announcements of the sale of cattle and slaves.

From a competitive point of view all you needed then was a louder/clearer voice. That would have been a great business idea 3000 years ago VEO – Voice Engine Optimisation. However, today to be competitive is a much more complicated and costly process.

Printed advertisements started a lot earlier than you may think with an advert recorded approx 3000 years ago from someone called “Thebes” calling for the recovery of a lost slave. The advert stated, “For his return to the shop of Hapu the Weaver, where the best cloth is woven to your desires, a whole gold coin is offered”. The Romans also embraced advertising and regularly pasted up signs promoting gladiator matches and circuses – examples of which have been found in Pompeii and Carthage.

Through the middle ages handbills and notices were tacked-up which usually consisted of drawings as well as writing to cater for the vast percentage of the population that could not read.

Newspaper advertising started early too and the first newspaper advert is believed to have appeared in England in a newspaper called the Weekly Newes in 1622. Historian Henry Sampson says that it was an ad for the return of a stolen horse.

During 1665, when the plague was rife, newspapers carried ads for preventatives and cures such as “Anti-Pestilential Pills”, “Incomparable Drink Against the Plague”, “The Only True Plague Water”, “Infallible Preventive Pills Against the Plague”, and “Sovereign Cordials Against the Corruption of the Air”.

Once the London Gazette announced in 1666 that it was going to print advertisements newspaper ads became the rage, and shopping guides started to be published around 1682 which consisted entirely of adverts.

In the 1700s England was flooded with pasted-up notices and posters. London became swamped with large advertising signs promoting merchants’ places of business. There became so many signs that even Charles II proclaimed, “No signs shall be hung across the streets shutting out the air and the light of the heavens.”

So what’s changed today? Well, very little, market traders still use the earliest form of advertising – the power of the voice, and can be heard shouting and peddling their wares in markets and streets throughout the world. Whilst we have moved on from gladiator matches (although cage fighting must be a close second), posters promoting entertainers, bands, circuses, shows etc are still posted up on any solid surface available. The world is still covered in the most basic of advertising i.e. posters, billboards and signs. Advertising at a base level is very simple, wherever there is a pair of eyes and/or ears someone in business will want to be seen or heard.

Advertising became more complex and costly with the advent of TV and radio. The first UK TV advert was broadcast on ITV on 22nd September 1955 advertising Gibbs SR Toothpaste (remember that), and the first (legal) TV advert in the USA cost just $4 and was for the watchmaker Bulova on July 1st 1941.

Television and radio became such hugely powerful advertising mediums as they were a place where you could pretty much guarantee getting your message across to a massive amount of “eyes and/or ears” in one go – viewing figures for the X factor in October 09 were approx 12million! However the cost in ad production and advertising rates precluded most small/medium-sized businesses from advertising on television and national radio.

Enter “The Internet”… No where near as expensive as television, can react to an advertisers requirements faster than television, and allows generic or incredibly niche targeting of an ad campaign to an incredibly macro or micro audience.

No wonder it’s so successful, and for the first time ever ad spend on the Internet has outperformed TV advertising. I predict the Internet still has a very long way to go, and many more innovative and creative offerings to come in the realm of advertising, with the next big thing being online video advertising. We’ve talked on previous blogs about the online video revolution (which we are proud that Wampit is at the forefront of), and in the not too distant future having a business video online will be crucial to any advertising campaign, whatever the size of business.

So what’s next for advertising? What will a blog like this be saying about advertising in 100 years time? Well keep an eye out for my next blog, where we will be discussing that very topic…

So what are the alternatives for people wanting to get back to work? Well, there are lots of other options available to the dedicated job hunter. This article gives an overview of the top three alternatives compared to working for someone else.

Start You Own Business

Despite what people and the media say, now is actually a good time to start a business, as just with boom times that create seemingly limitless opportunities, so too does an economic downturn (recession). In fact, economic downturns actually create fantastic opportunities. In the words of James Khan, a true business person will look at what other people are doing and do the exact opposite! This is certainly true if you take the housing market as an example – now is actually the best time to buy if you’ve got the finance. There are some fantastic bargains out there that will yield significant long-term results. The key is to look for opportunities that the economic situation creates, and quickly react to satisfy the need.

Overall Risk: high

Pros: potentially high profit / truly your own boss

Cons: start up costs / finance maintenance / rate of return / risk of success

Franchise

Starting a franchise is a safer option compared to starting your own business – why? Well, it’s all to do with being established, i.e. brand and processes. The whole business model is defined, and proven right down to projected profit returns. If you follow the business model to the letter then the chances of success are extremely high. A good place to start is to buy a copy of ‘What Franchise’ and read up on other peoples’ experiences. However, be aware that it’s not a 100% guarantee of success – it will be up to you to put the hard work and effort in.

Overall Risk: medium

Pros: established brand / established processes / cheaper set-up costs

Cons: constrained by franchise rules / initial investment

Work From Home Opportunities (WFH)

There are lots of ‘work from home opportunities’ out there, however, I’m sure you’ll notice that not much information is given in their advertisements. This is because the jobs are usually highly repetitive, or can be difficult to yield successful results. However, there are some golden nugget opportunities if you look hard, so it’s always worth considering them – however, make sure you do your research, and try to find other real people that have been successful in the role.

Alternatively, you can also take control of the WFH route, and proactively advertise your skills – there are numerous freelance sites out there that people can post their skills / experience on. Companies with a specific recruitment need scour these sites looking for suitable people. A good example of a freelance job site is elance.com

Overall Risk: low

Pros: no financial investment / flexible hours / potential return

Cons: tend to be repetitive tasks / no benefits (sick pay etc) / you’ll have to work hard!

We’ve just launched a new and exciting sales role opportunity at Wampit®. Please visit our other blog announcing the job to find out more information.

If you’re anything like me you’ll throw those flyers away, as funnily enough you’re not ready to order a takeaway at 8.00am on a Tuesday morning whilst picking up the post in your dressing gown. Then later (usually a lot later when you have a few friends around), you are pulling all the stuff out of the kitchen cupboards & draws trying to find that illusive up-to-date takeaway menu – it’s usually a fruitless exercise as the only menus to be found have offers ending a year ago – even the ones found in the printed directories can be up to a year old.

So how do we get over this modern-day problem, i.e. how can restaurants market their menus responsibly, and how can we lay our hands on relevant menus that are up-to-date at a minutes notice? Well, it’s no problem if you like, and only eat Dominos as it seems they have the best menu and order process online. However, if you’re looking to compare other restaurant menus then you either have to go looking on search engines to find their telephone numbers, and if you’re very lucky then they may even publish a link to their website, and subsequent online menu. However, in most cases you’ll have to pick up the phone and ask them what they have, then try to work it all out and hope to receive the correct order.

Restaurants are now beginning to realise the power of the Internet and are starting to publish their menus on their own websites, however, in my experience this tends to be a one-off exercise and the menu is soon out-of-date. This is usually because the website has been built by another company / person that charges for amendments, or the update process is too complicated, or it simply just gets forgotten.

So what’s the solution, i.e. how can restaurants publish a current menu, be able to amend it any time they want for free, and for Internet users to be able to compare restaurants in a uniform format with a link to detailed menus. Well here at Wampit we think we’ve come up with an easy and cost effective process. Basically, any food establishment can purchase our ‘document upload – menu’ product for a nominal £25pa, and in seconds upload their very own menu that is stored against their free Wampit listing.

Restaurants can either upload any existing menu in a PDF format, or create one from scratch in Microsoft Word document, save it as a PDF and then upload it. This really simplifies the process and puts the restaurant in control of the publication of their own menu. The restaurant can log back into their Wampit account management screen as many times as they like during the year, and upload a new up-to-date menu. To make the most of this product they can also publish a link to the menu on Wampit in their other on-line or traditional print advertising.

As for us (the takeaway lover), no more out-of-date and old directory menus. Let’s hope one day all our post will be menu flyer free – as of course we don’t want anything to distract us from those all important bills!

Please see our information page for more information or our help page to learn more about the process.

If you had a shop, would you stop passersby from entering unless they called you first, or alternatively expect them to have to ask around to find out how to get in? Of course you wouldn’t, however that is exactly what you will be doing if you do not place a link on your business advertising to your own website.

If you think about it, if you do not place a link on your business advertising you are only leaving a prospective customer with two options:

1. Call you on the phone:

Expecting someone to call you on the telephone immediately after viewing some key details on your advert is not only limiting the number of customers that will call you, but could also force your potential customers to your competitors, particularly if they have an advert in the same place as you but do have a link to their website.

A potential customer that is browsing an online directory is, at that moment, in the mindset of being “online” – why “force” them to have to go “offline” and make a phone call just because you haven’t given them the option of quickly and easily viewing your website?

When you walk into a shop after looking in the window, you rarely walk straight up to the store manager and demand to buy something. You usually like to take your time and browse the store looking at prices, dimensions, colours etc before you ask for help. Well – it is no different in the online world. Due to the limited content available on most adverts, a customer is likely to want to explore your business offerings further in their own time by easily clicking on a link to your website.

Your advert in effect is your shop window as it contains the key information / images etc that you feel will entice a potential customer to use you. You need a “door” on that advert that enables someone to go directly into your “online shop” so you can keep the customers journey focused, and hopefully from there, once they have had all the information you can offer, they will either purchase/book online or call you, or visit your premises.

2. Try to find your website on an alternative search engine:

This one amazes me! You would be surprised by the number of advertisers that waste valuable text space on an advert by putting things like “Google us to find our website”. Think about it from a prospective customers point of view… can we really expect a customer to leave the site they’re on, remember the company name they have just viewed, launch Google and search for that company, find the link in the results and then click on the right one to launch your website? Would you do that? Especially when the their competitors advert may be just below them, with a link to their website.

Or the other one we see from time to time is “visit A7aerialsdotcom”. Again this is expecting the potential customer to have to copy and paste or manually retype the text (correctly) into the browser and hit go. Again, will customers be bothered to do this, particularly when some of your competitor adverts will have a nice simple link button on their advert directly to their web site?

I hope this blog has made you look again at the importance of linking your advertising to your website. There are many online business search engines / directories out there, and they all offer a link to your website (free or paid), however the price business directories charge is usually very low due to the importance and commonality of web links. For example BT Tradespace offer a free web link, and here at Wampit we only charge £19 a year. However, other directories are still charging anyting up to £300 so be careful and spend your money wisely.

For the reasons mentioned above, a web link is a vital part of your online business UK advertising, and if you have a business website your business advertising should always link to it from as many online directories as you can….

Wampit® is a free UK business directory offering high quality advert listings for all companies. Simply visit wampit.co.uk to register, and create your free advert listing in minutes.

Wampit® was created by UK entrepreneurs Paul Holland and Adam Purrier who decided to use their wealth of experience gained within the advertising industry to create a new breed of business search engine / directory.

Adam and Paul believe that Internet business advertising is still ‘traditionally old school’ and ’sales focused’ and wanted to bring in a more modernised approach to online business directories.

Working from offices in London, they decided to create a UK business search engine that is not only at the forefront of the developing online video revolution, but also takes in the ethos of social networking i.e. free rich content such as video and images and live twitter feeds.

Let’s break these down further to explain why Wampit® has focussed primarily on these two areas:

The Online Video Revolution:

The growth of online video has been unprecedented with the number of videos viewed online in the UK growing nearly 50 per cent year on year (source – comScore).

Businesses are starting to understand that video is something they now need to consider in their marketing arsenal, as it can be the closest thing they can offer their potential customers to actually being there.

As with any “new opportunities” businesses such as online video production companies are a growth area charging up to £1000 for a professional business promotional video. Wampit enables you to upload a video for free whether it has been professionally or home produced.

With the quality of even basic digital camcorders and phones today businesses can make their own video/clip of their products, service, premises and upload it onto their free Wampit advert in minutes.

The growth of online video is greatly supported by the belief that video increases online conversion rates by up to 300%

The Social Networking Revolution:

38 percent of British Internet users now have a social networking site profile which is up from 22 percent in 2007 (source – Ofcom)

This means that people are not only used to but “expect to” create a profile for free using rich content such as video, images etc.

Wampit is the first true business search engine that allows you to create your business listing for free using content such as images/video.

The growth of social networking websites and blogs now account for nearly ten percent of the total time spent on the Internet, exceeding even email, according to a new study released by Nielsen Online.

17 per cent of all time spent on the Internet in August took place on either social networking or blogging sites – a 300 per cent increase from the previous year. (source – The Nielsen Company)

Twitter has also rapidly become the darling of the Internet and approx 19% of Internet users now say they use Twitter or another service to share updates about themselves, or to see updates about others which is an 8% growth since April 09 (source – Pew Research)

Wampit® is the first UK business directory that enables all businesses to simply create a “live twitter feed” onto their listing to display their latest tweets.

So you can now see why Wampit® has been created for UK businesses, and in summary, it offers quality free business advertising listings that are rich in content and innovative in their design (video/Twitter feeds).

Importantly the Wampit® site is clean and easy to use for businesses and users alike, with no superfluous information or third party advertising. Businesses can register themselves and create their free business advert by completing one, easy to follow registration page. Also, once registered they can log back in at any time to update / amend their details.

Each business that registers also gets their own individual “landing page” which Wampit® automatically submits to major search engines in order to provide further exposure for their listing, as well as drive traffic back to the site.
